November is #NaNoWriMo (Novel Writing Month) #NaPodPoMo (Podcast Posting Month) and so many other things. I decided to declare November: #Networking Month aka #NatNetMo!
Throughout November I will post a networking tip every day on social media. Below, find my first five tips.
Tip 1: Schedule a daily networking appointment with yourself. If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist!
Tip 2: Take a walk. … down the street/around the block/through a strip mall or farmers market … without your smartphone.
*If you don’t want to leave your phone at home, that’s okay; just keep it in your pocket.*
When you walk, device-free, you are more aware of your surroundings and more likely to get into conversation. Say “hi” to a neighbor. Pet a dog. Make a new friend. You never know.
Tip 3: Call and check in on a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. It’ll likely make both of your days!
Tip 4: Review and update your LinkedIn profile. When you meet new people, either out and about or through friends and colleagues, you want to put your best digital foot forward, since you will likely connect online.
To start, make sure:
– Your profile pic is professional and looks like you
– You have a branded banner graphic in the background
– Your headline reflects who you are, how you help, and what makes you unique. Bonus points for including a conversation starter/personal fact that makes you stand out
Tip 5: Perform an act of kindness. Friends, strangers, everyone can use a little extra TLC…. Call a friend or two and see what they need/how you can help.
Networking is about relationship development. It’s being your human self, reaching out to friends and peers, and staying in touch.
